For the past few weeks my local newspaper, the Kansas City Star, has been requesting readers to send in their autobiographies. But they didn’t want full-length novels. They wanted an autobiography of our lives using just six words.

I thought this was fascinating and went to work thinking about what mine would be. A few entries the paper shared that I loved:

“Went to college. Came home pregnant.”

“Born naked, raised Catholic, love fashion.”

“Went for it…almost always succeeded.”

“Life’s funny secret: some assembly required.”

“I look like a great cook.”

And it didn’t take me long to come up with my own:

Now, everything I have always wanted.

So, what’s yours? If you had to describe your life – now, then, in the future, whatever – using only 6 words, how would you do it?

** From the Kansas City Star: My Life in Exactly Six Words. **

A few share-worthy sites I’ve spent some time with this week:

Zappos blog & core values Do you really know how cool of a company Zappos, the online customer service company disguised as a discount shoe store, is? Very, very cool. I mean, just look at their core values. Neat, eh? While you’re there, read the story of how Zappos began and where they see themselves going.

Young Entrepreneur I’ve only just begun digging into this site but it has already proven that it has a lot to offer. Discussion forums, blog posts, articles on all types of entrepreneurial topics such as Buying a Business, International Trade, Starting a Business, Sales and Marketing, and more, the site is jam-packed with information and support for business owners. All applicable way beyond a ‘young’ entrepreneur. In their own words, “YoungEntrepreneur.com is an award-winning small business website for entrepreneurs and small businesses and is comprised of entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs who are truly passionate about economic development and enjoy promoting the formation and success of innovative and growth-oriented companies.” Neat.

Darren Rowse A super-blogger with multiple sites, Darren is best known for ProBlogger.net, which helps other bloggers learn how to be the best blogger they can be. This week he launched DarrenRowse.com, his namesake site, to use as a forum to chat about whatever random thoughts cross his mind, topics that don’t neatly fall into the categories of his other domains. Considering Darren’s large following and how knowledgeable he is about so many topics, his new blog surely will not disappoint.

Two Sales Girls Jamie Verkamp and Laura Lake, two marketers by trade, also launched their brand new site this week, TwoSalesGirls.com. A place for support, education, and fun for all female entrepreneurs, TwoSalesGirls is a membership site that includes a strong focus on discussion and support and promises weekly podcasts, monthly mastermind calls, and regular email newsletters. (In the spirit of full disclosure, TwoSalesGirls asked me to be a Charter Member of the site and I excitedly accepted. I will be contributing to the discussion forums and participating in the podcasts and calls over the coming weeks and months.) The site is geared towards those in sales (which is, what…all of us?) but just as easily provides benefit to all kinds of entrepreneurial women. Their launch is blowing away expectations, go check it out.

What cool sites have you run into this week?

Nathan and I spent last weekend with my college girlfriends and their respective significant others, all celebrating the marriage of one of our closest friends. Gathering with old friends always makes me think of our lives, then and now. We were all together last more than 6 years ago, since then communicating via email and phone, seeing each other maybe one or two weekends a year. Quite a bit of time during those few weekends to develop our own lives, carve out our niche, grow as individuals. No matter how much we grow or in what directions we will remain friends always – that’s an unstated commitment to which we’ve all agreed. However, our gatherings always remind me how much I’ve grown since leaving campus. I’ve read more books than I can count, surrounded myself with the best of those I want to emulate, gotten married, twice experienced home ownership, turned my car into a permanent, rolling, self-education university, become a doggie-mommy, and defined my true passion and purpose in life more than I ever thought I could before turning 30. I’ve started 3 businesses, 2 websites, failed more than I’ve succeeded, and gained a confidence that can only come with truly figuring out what matters most to you in life.

These friends knew me before all of that.

Back when I dated jerks because I didn’t have the ability to realize that I was the better person for not being interested in them, not the other way around. Back when I complained about not having any money, but was unwilling to see how I could change the situation. Back when I thought I wanted to be an orthodontist. Yikes.

They knew me before I knew me. So being around them now, 6 long years later (or, only 6 years later) reminds me of the massive personal growth I’ve experienced since we were all a part of each other’s daily lives. There’s nothing like good friends to humble you and remind you of how far you’ve come. There’s nothing like growing, but not growing apart. And there’s nothing like friends that will love you either way. I’m so grateful for each and every one of them and would most definitely not be the person I have developed into now without their friendship for the crazy person I was then.
